Northwest Missouri State University’s Concert Band, joined by the Concert Choir, will perform their first concert of the fall semester on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. in the Charles Johnson Theater at the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building.

The Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. William Sutton, assistant professor of music, will play a variety of works, including JaRod Hall’s “Three Minutes to Midnight,” Ralph Ford’s “Shannon Falls,” Franco Cesarini’s “Greek Folk Song Suite” and Karl L. King’s “Aces of the Air.”

The Concert Choir, led by Dr. Adam Zrust, assistant professor of choral music education, also will present an assortment of pieces, including Rosephanye Powell’s “Non Nobis Domine,” Jennifer Lucy Cook’s “What I was Made For,” Roland Carter’s “Give me Jesus” and Mark Hayes’ “Home on the Range.”

“Attending this concert is a great way for the Northwest and the greater Maryville community to support the arts and the hard work of the Northwest students who make this ensemble possible,” Sutton said. “The evening concert offers an opportunity to enjoy music performed by both band and choir.”

Founded in 2021, the Concert Band, under the direction of Sutton, features brass, woodwind, percussion and string bass instruments. It performs music from a variety of time periods and styles, from historically significant works to new band compositions and premieres. There are no auditions to join the ensemble, which is open to all Northwest students and employees as well as residents of the community. The ensemble presents two concerts during both the fall and spring semesters.

Formed this fall, the Concert Choir, led by Zrust, is the newest choral ensemble at Northwest. Conducted by faculty and students, the intergenerational group affords Northwest’s pre-service music teachers an opportunity to gain hands-on teaching experience prior to their student teaching experience. It is open to all members of the Northwest community with no auditions necessary.
